I described in a previous article, the struggle with sinusitis Moishey endured as a young child. During one particular bout of a brand-new green-nosed infection, he sneezed exceptionally powerfully and out came a barrage of nasal junk, mixed with sparkling sequins and beads.

While Moishey beat some of the odds that are part and parcel of Down syndrome, he couldn’t win ‘em all. Chronic strep throat and sinus infections plagued him for a lengthy part of his toddler years.

Fast and curious; two words that can be used to describe little children. They are usually fast to act and are curious to smell, taste or touch objects in their surroundings. Unfortunately, this curiosity will often lead to a foreign body emergency!

I walk into exam room 5 and Winston is waiting there with his mother. Winston is 5 years old and has Down syndrome. I am an Otolaryngologist, also known as an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. I have been seeing Winston since he was an infant.

The warmth of the Shabbos candles did little to dispel the fear and angst in my heart. Moishey was three years old, fast asleep for the night and all was peaceful. My husband raised his Kiddush cup and started to recite the Friday night ritual blessings over the wine, gently looking at the burning candles, while the covered challos patiently waited their turn for acknowledgment.
